Paste Magazine top 25 breweries of the Decade

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Paste magazine has been making all kinds of top 25 lists looking back on the first 10 years of this new Century.  Although they typically focus on “music, film, TV, books and video games,” they took out some time and made a list of American Breweries as well.  We land at #8 on their list:

8. Three Floyds

Headquarters: Hammond, Ind.

Established: 1996

Our Favorite Beer: Dreadnaught IPA I say the Dreadnaught IPA is our favorite of their 60 beers only because none of us have ever been privileged enough to have the Gargantuan Russian Stout, available only on “Dark Lord Day,” the last Saturday in April. Despite the ominous name, some of the proceeds go towards charity.

They listed us as being in Hammond (and they listed the old website – come on guys) which ironically we moved out of, and into Munster in 2000, making it a decade. (It got fixed) However, we always happy to be included on any “best of” list.

Großer Kurfürst tapping event 11/17/09

Friday, November 13th, 2009

On Tuesday we will be tapping Großer Kurfürst our Munster Style Dunkel “Großer Kurfürst – Named after one of the German Battleships scuttled along with the rest of the German Fleet at Scapa Flow in 1918.  A Munster-Style Dunkel dark brown in color with a strong malt aroma.  Crisp but full bodied, it finishes with a hint of baker’s chocolate.  22 IBU 5.8% a.b.v.”

That will happen at Noon.  In addition to the tapping, we will have special menu items prepared using the beer as an ingredient.   This beer will be a Pub only release.  If you were looking for an excuse to head to Munster, here you go.  0.5l steins will sell for $6.00 while supplies last.

Blackheart and Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beers 2009

This past Saturday was the 2009 Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beers. Last year we won a gold and Best in Show with our Barrel Aged Behemoth. This year we won a bronze medal for Blackheart, our English style IPA aged on toasted oak.

The results should be posted soon to the Guild’s website.

This is a really great festival with beers from all over the nation, the awards are judged by industry professionals, and in some cases, this is your only chance to try some of these tiny, tiny batches of rare beer.  If you didn’t get a chance to make it to one of the two sessions this year, I suggest you keep your eyes peeled around this time next year.
